It’s unfortunate that you had to cut it short due to your health, but I’m glad to hear that you’re okay now. Your description of the journey through different states and countries is captivating, and it’s clear that there’s still a longing to explore the unfinished parts of South America. I’m sure many readers, myself included, are inspired by your resilience and determination.

I did it a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I just love Mexico because there is so much to see and enjoy.

XT 756’s are practically Tourney’s these days. There is nothing special about it. I’ ve used almost all Shimano hubs, except XTR’s. Any XT starting from M770 is really solid.

Basic Shimano hubs have sealing issues. I broke a few of them, mostly entry to mid-level, but newer XT’s with thick, aluminium axles never disappoint. Anything below XT, or older XT’s are definitely not suited for wet riding, let alone bike touring. I’m a fairly heavy guy, ride anywhere with ridiculously high pressure and skinny tires, so I’m not very friendly to hubs.

I use rust converter inside the steel frames, and works really well.

I was trying to make my own pannier bags, but I guess I’m lazy. Besides, in my country, finding Cordura is next to impossible. Anything available as “waterproof” is tarp, which is not even a fabric 🙂 Yet I can make some classic Ortlieb knock-offs some day.

I also tried silicone + mineral spirit formula, and beeswax + vaseline works as a miracle for fabrics. I’m leaving a link to blog post about it, in case you might be interested: https://loveforbikes.com/diy-waterproofing-fabrics-bags-shoes/

thanks for this route. What do you think about doing the 1st half in the end of february ? I don’t really care about the cold, I’m more thinking about the snow. My bike is a titanium hardtail MTB with 2.25 or 2.35 tyres, rigid fork (then 2,25 max) or suspension fort (then 2.25 or 2.35), I also have the 27.5+ option (27×2.6)

Thanks

Arthur
